Presented is a superb quality Whiting sterling silver 3 piece tea set. This set dates to around the 1880s-1890s. The set is very ornate and impressive, with a bold vertical ribbed design around the sides of the bodies and paw form feet. Each piece has a finial in the form of a basket of flowers. The insulators are beautifully carved and detailed. The spouts and the thumbpieces of the handles have a textured, foliate design. Each piece is sturdy and well made, with a nice feeling of weight in the hand.
The set consists of:
Teapot: 11 inches from spout to handle, 5 inches tall. Measured capacity of about 3 1/2 cups (28 fluid ounces/0.8 liters)
Coffee pot: 6 1/2 inches tall. Stamped capacity of 2 pints (32 fluid ounces/.9 liter)
Sugar: 8 1/4 inches from handle to handle, 3 7/8 inches tall. Stamped capacity of 1 pint (2 cups)
This set is in great condition. The handles are all tightly mounted to the bodies. The hinges of the lids on the two pots are in great shape and the lids close neatly. There are no splits, no leaks, no dents, no cracks, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
Each piece is stamped with the Whiting maker's mark, sterling, and the number 515.
The total weight for the set is 2123 grams or 74.9 regular ounces.
