What is Cloisonné?
The word comes from the French meaning "enclosed", and is an ancient metal and enamel technique in which "compartments" or cells are added to a metal object such as a metal vase or bowl. This is done by soldering to the vessel thin silver or gold or brass wires or strips on edge. These are visible in the finished piece, separating the different compartments. Colored enamel powder is then used to fill the cells. The entire item is then fired in a kiln and subsequently polished. The result is a unique item which is functional, durable, and quite beautiful.
