Fine English George III Sterling Silver Shell and Floral Oval Teapot; Andrew Fogelberg, 1792; Excellent Condition
This is a beautifully crafted George III sterling silver oval teapot.
From the very will regarded London silversmith Andrew Fogelberg.
Date marked 1792.
There is no record of his apprenticeship or freedom. It is very likely he was trained in Sweden before emigrating to England. First listed 1773. Presumed he worked earlier, and records would be in the missing ledgers.
Grimwade writes “…his production shows an elegant restrained classicism, especially in use of small cameo like medallions” (page 511).
Examples from Fogelberg in major collections. The Clark Art Institute displays two of his teapots.
Classic oval form.
Beautifully repousse shell and floral displays. Set within unique border of star burst florals, alternating with heart framed acanthus.
Center with even larger star burst medallion, set within shell and scroll frame. Leaf cap angular C-scroll handle.
Never monogrammed.
This fine George III sterling teapot is 10 ½ inches handle to spout and 6 ½ tall.
Crafted in exceptionally thick, heavy gauge sterling weighs 19 ounces.
Crisp, well struck hallmarks.
In excellent condition. The brilliant shell and floral decoration retain its original crisp, vibrant detail. Stands firm on table or serving tray. Cover well fit to base.
