    Description

Selling off collection of exceptional sixth plate daguerreotypes.
This auction is for a sixth plate daguerreotype by Henry Insley, depicting a very determined looking dapper Bon Vivant who exudes confidence. He looks slightly away from the photographer while enjoying his lit cigar and sports a white Victorian hat with black band, pinky ring, high collared shirt and tie.
This image is very sharp and clear with great contrast, but does have some spots mostly on the upper left and right and a few light scratches at about 11 o'clock. A great image in spite of a few imperfections. "Insley" is stamped on the lower portion of the mat, just above the preserver. It is housed in a full case with nice velvet pad, mat and preserver. See photos.
Henry Insley had several studio locations in New York City from 1845 to 1861. In 1852, he was awarded a patent for "Illuminated Daguerreotypes" which he claimed produced an image of greater boldness and relief.
This image appears in the April - June 2020 issue of the Daguerreian Society Quarterly and if so desired, this publication can be purchased from the Daguerreian Society.
