Chinese hardwood peach-shaped paint/paste divided box - 19th century
Well worn hinged wooden paint box that was used for Chinese painting in the 19th Century. The shape of a peach brings good fortune and longevity.
The box is hard-carved from one solid piece of tropical hardwood with nice tight grain and heavy feel. The five paint compartments inside have rounded edges, as does the mouth opening. There is red paint residue in the compartments.
The lid is a ¼ inch thick single piece of the same heavy wood. The stem is where the top pivots on a slotted screw. The wood has a nice worn feel and is well used.
MEASUREMENTS
4  ½” x 3 ½” x 1 3/8” tall. Weighs 5.5 oz
CONDITION
There are a couple of chips on the edge of the lid; even the chips are dark and worn from age. There are stains and wear from usage, all of which give the piece a lot of character.
A lovely well-used and worn utilitarian object that has become a work of art.
