Description
ENGLISH STERLING SILVER & CRYSTAL WINE CLARET JUGMADE BY ASPREY & Co 1979
Pleased to offer a stunning never used Asprey Claret Jug made from a thick cut crystal with sterling gilt mounts to base, handle with collar, neck & corked stopper.
All parts of the jug are sterling silver with both matte and polished gilt finish.
The piece was hand made in 1968 but is styled after a Georgian/Regency style repousse claret jug.
The pear shaped body of crystal, displays an applied silver grape & leaf vine to the handle that is integral to the collar and spout of the jug. The grape & leaf pattern continuing around the collar is not repousse...but is actually engraved solid silver! A figural face of Bacchus is carved under the spout. The curved lidded top opens to display a matching polished gilt interior with hallmarked cork stopper showing no evidence of use (staining) The top displays a figural babe with raised arm eating grapes.
The heavy jug sits stop a thick solid circular silver base that continues the grape and leaf pattern engraved into the silver. All parts of the jug bearing marching makers mark of Large A & Co Ltd within a quatrfoil for Asprey, London. Lion passant for assayed English silver,
leopards head for London, date letter of "e" for 1979. Stamped Asprey under the base. Cork stamped with lion passant.
A rather special wine pitcher perfect as the ultimate wedding gift, a 25th silver anniversary, or perhaps, just to have at the dinner table!
Upon research this piece retailed for 8,000 pounds in one of their 1979 purple catalogs.
