ENGLISH VICTORIAN STERLING SILVER CLARET DECANTERMADE BY JOHN WILLMIN FIGG 1856
Please to offer an
exceptionally
clean and pristine example of an English claret (wine) table decanter.
Of classic styling with a thick neck and
bulbous
base culminating in a wide band sterling collar with D scrolled handle attached to a lower collar. Of plain design with simple sloped gadrooned beading,
topped
by a stepped and sloped cap cover with solid silver grape & leaf finial. Once can tell the
finial
is original by the placement of the lock pin, held in place
with
the original wing nut punched lion passant. The base displays a
standard
circular sunburst
engraved
in the crystal. A
fortress
entry armorial is engraved under the spout. Stands firm & level.
The decanter stands 11 1/2 inches tall and at
its
widest
is
8 1/2 inches across. Exceptional condition and clearly punched with hallmarks under the cap, on the finial, and on the collar....lion passant for assayed English silver,
leopards
head for
London,
date letter of a
Gothic
"a" for 1856, and regent's head for Queen
Victoria
. Stamped with the makers mark of a I and J within two co-joined
circles
for John Wilmin Figg (1732-1788)
