Description
Welcome toAntiques & Moore!
This listing is for a FABULOUS 5-piece antique English Sterling Silver coffee/tea service made by Elkington & Co. in 1909. No monograms. Total combined weight of set is 3460 grams.
This stunning high quality sterling silver coffee/tea set includes an impressive tilting hot water kettle which is often hard to find as this piece was not made to match every silver pattern. The engraved pattern includes a leaf garland that encircles each pot above the shoulder, a leaf and ribbon band on the shoulder area of each piece with an engraved leaf garland forming a medallion/cartouche on the center of the front and back. There is another matching leaf garland that encircles the raised foot below the pedestal of each piece. Each pot also has a nice original ebony handle.
The lid on each of the three pots has a nice, heavy hinge that opens and closed each lid correctly and securely.
The hot water kettle has an extension on the one end of the oval base which fits into the hinge at that end of the stand. A "key" slides into this hinge to secure the kettle to the stand for tilting. There is also a "key" that fits into a slot/hole on the opposite end to "lock" the kettle in place when not in use otherwise it is left out and the kettle will tilt.
The stand sits high on four tall ornately decorated feet and has a burner in the center to be used for keeping the water hot. This stand is exceptional alone and very impressive when the kettle is in place. The stand is also hallmarked for Sterling Silver with the same English hallmarks found on the other pieces.
Each piece is stamped with the English hallmarks for "Birminghan, Sterling", date letter for 1909 and the maker's stamp of Elkington & Co. who began making quality sterling silver items in 1906.
Also marked on the bottom of each piece "Elkington, 16655".
