Up for this auction is a
HANDCRAFTED, LATHE TURNED SCULPTURE OF A MOREL MUSHROOM.  IT IS CRAFTED OF LILAC WOOD, SIGNED & DATED BY MASTER WOODWORKERS, JERRY & SUE BAKER, 2009.
This beautifully handcrafted effigy of a morel mushroom is turned & carved from a lovely piece of LILAC wood.  Imagine the wood image as an actual morel mushroom that, in today's market, you would probably pay, per pound, the price I'm asking for this handcrafted carving.
While most edible mushrooms can be cultivated, the process of growing The Grand Morel has baffled amateur & professional mycologists for years!
The LILAC wood itself is almost alive as it adds its own spin to the carving; the master woodworker turns & carves the wood, eliminating the parts of the wood until, like in the frosty spring woodland mornings, the morel pops out!
Did the characteristic cavities of the morel mushroom cap just appear as the artist turned the wood on the lathe, or did the artist carve them as he saw fit?
Most types of wood surprise turners & carvers with characteristic color changes, fractures, & splits that appear as the artist turns the wood on the lathe or uses various woodcarving tools to simulate reality.
With this beautiful handcrafted LILAC wood sculpture, the hunt is over for an incomparable gift to give your fungi loving friends.  Perfect for a small nook in any room, especially the kitchen.
As a young girl growing up in southern Indiana, spring
Saturday mornings were always reserved for morel mushroom hunting with my father, who was a diehard outdoorsman.  My father seemed to have an almost "truffle pig" sense for finding morels.  These gold dust treasures have a mystique all their own, and depending on the weather each spring, his favorite haunts might proffer the morel motherlode or leave us both apprehensive with longing.
One of my father's favorite indicators of a "find" was a small tract of "Jack-in-the-Pulpits",
commonly called Indian turnip, which is a shade loving plant species found in rich, moist, deciduous woods & floodplains, perfect terra firma for morels.
On days when we came home with the "motherlode", which included many large & medium sized morels, my mother would be ready with her buttered skillet, personal egg batter recipe for morel dipping & a container of flour to dust them.  I can still smell & hear those morels as they sizzled in the buttered skillet!

We came across these many sculptures when we were attempting to create a "mushroom forest" for one of our "Alice in Wonderland" vignettes during the Spring/Summer Festival, "Storybook Playhouses" at the Dallas Arboretum in Dallas, Texas (see photo #12).
These one-of-a-kind carved & turned pieces are individual works of art.  Every object is named & signed by the artists.

CONDITION
Many of my items are vintage & fairly aged; accordingly, there may be some issues with individual pieces that are associated with the passage of time.
Each piece is gently used & may exhibit minor glitter loss and/or paint anomalies due to the vintage quality of the item.
I have looked each of them over to detect any major flaws Any serious damage, fading or discoloration that I can perceive will be disclosed; however small flaws (i.e. imperfections in the glaze/paint, a slipped stitch, etc.) may be missed.
ALL OF MY COLLECTIONS HAVE BEEN STORED IN A TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT IN OUR SMOKE-FREE, PET-FRIENDLY HOME.
