Pompeiian sterling silver coffee set on tray. Made by Mt Vernon in Mount Vernon, New York, ca 1920. This set comprises coffeepot, creamer, and sugar on tray. Each: Ovoid body on round foot mounted to square base and reeded scroll bracket handles. Vitruvian scroll rims interspersed with paterae and engraved garlands. On front oval medallion inset with bacchante. On back vacant oval medallion. Coffeepot has domed cover with vasiform finial and scrolled spout with animal-head spout. Creamer has helmet mouth. Tray is oval and has gilt rectangular tablets with cherubs engaged in allegorical activities at ends. An austere and reverential revival of century-old Neoclassicism in a hard-to-find pattern.
Fully marked including maker's and New York retailer's stamps (Ayre & Taylor), pattern name, and no. N186.
