Must See 1802 English Sterling Silver Teapot by Peter Ann and William Bateman
Presented is a fantastic quality English Georgian sterling silver teapot, dated
1802. This teapot was made by Peter, Ann and William Bateman, the son, daughter
in law, and grandson of renowned silversmith Hester Bateman. Silver by the
Bateman family is considered highly collectible today. This teapot in particular
is very well made, with beautifully hand engraved floral decoration around the
upper portion of the body as well as the more classical vertical ribbed design
around the lower half. The handle and finial are finely carved from rich dark
wood. The teapot has a capacity of about 7 cups, or 56 fluid ounces/1.7 liters.
This piece is in excellent overall condition. There are a couple of minor
dings here and there, but nothing you'd see without close, careful inspection
under very good light. There are no splits, no dents, no breaks, no monograms,
no monogram removals, and no repairs to the body, though one knuckle on the
hinge of the lid has an old solder repair. The handle is still sound and well
mounted to the body, though it has a little bit of wiggle.
This piece is hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver, the
leopard's head crowned for the city of London, the date letter G for 1802, the
duty stamp of King George IV's head, and the maker's mark for Peter, Ann and
William Bateman.
The teapot measures about 11 3/4 inches from handle to spout and stands about
7 1/2 inches tall at the top of the finial.
The teapot weighs 613 grams or 21.6 regular ounces.
