Vintage Chinese Trinket Jewelry Box Antique Porcelain Shard Qing Dynasty Hand Made
This is a Chinese hand made metal box decorated with a beautiful porcelain shard dating back to Qing Dynasty. The shard is beautifully hand painted in beautiful colors and appears to be the shoes/feet of a figure who is walking.
The box has a beautiful repeating pattern around the circumference and a fluted like derail around the edge of the shard.
Both the shard and the box are in a very good condition without breaks, bends, cracks, chips or repairs. Box will show age and patina. May need light cleaning or polishing due to age, preowned display/use and storage.
    Approximate Measurements:
    1” high by 2” wide by 2 1/4” long
    From a smoke free home.
    Some history...
Over millennia Chinese porcelain evolved into an art form. Porcelain items produced during Qing Dynasty (1644-1911 A. D.) are especially well regarded and have been extensively exported to Europe and other parts of the world. They show a great variety in form and color and are sought after by collectors. Each piece that is inlaid with antique porcelain shards is one of a kind. Shards that feature human figures are especially rare and valued.
Shard boxes were made in the 70's and 80's after tens of thousands of Qing and Ming Dynasty (14th to 19th Century) pieces of ancient pottery were destroyed during the 1966-76 Chinese Cultural Revolution. Ownership of such "bourgeois" items could mean steep taxes or even death sentences. Shop keepers gathered up the shards and made these trinket boxes and other jewelry from the shards. Each one is unique as the boxes are made to match the shard shapes. They have been very popular to collect and still are sought out even as the stocks are dwindling. They have the allure of being able to possess a piece of ancient Chinese porcelain that most of us would not otherwise be able to own.
