    Description

bsolutely amazing antique sterling teapot, made in London in 1834. This repoussé style is in excellent condition and of an exceptional quality, with multiple overall floral designs and flourishes. Plus, the teapot itself is of a very pleasing shape. There one dent that is not particularly visible due to the complexity of the decorative work – it is shown in one of the pictures – and is a superlative example of this late Georgian style of English silver smithing. This teapot is closing in on its 200th anniversary and is still going strong. The lid fits tightly and there is no damage to the spout, handle or the charming floral finial, and no monograms or removals.
This is late Georgian in style, even though it was made during the reign of William IV, because William succeeded a century or so of Georges and was king for only three years (great story how his reign led into Queen Victoria, even if you're not a history nut it's an exciting read).
The weight is 820 grams on my kitchen scale, which is exceptionally heavy even for this type of work and its age, another testament to its high quality.
The hallmarks are crisp and clear both on the underside, underneath the lid, and on the handle. The hallmark for IW is not does not lead clearly to a single silversmith. There is some information here: https://www.silvercollection.it/englishsilvermarksXI3.html and here https://www.silvermakersmarks.co.uk/Makers/London-IE-IH.html mostly showing how confusing the IW mark can be, but the London and date hallmark are clear and correct. My best guess is Joseph Wilson or John Wakefield, both of whom were active in London in the 1830s.
